Recovery Football Competition Kicks Off in Leeds

5 WAYS Recovery Academy is organising a Recovery Football 5-a-Side Tournament.

Taking place in Recovery Month, on Thursday 25 September at Powerleague in Leeds, the competition is open to teams in recovery from issues with alcohol and/or drugs, as well as allies and supporters.

“Being active and connected are vital parts of recovery. Football gives people a reason to show up, support each other, and have a laugh, while boosting mental and physical health,” said organiser Kieran Scargill who volunteers at 5 WAYS. “Friendships form on the pitch that carry on long after the final whistle. That sense of belonging can make a huge difference to people in recovery.

“Football is a powerful force in bringing people together. And for some of those in recovery, it’s more than just a game — it’s a lifeline.”

The competition will be a friendly 5-a-side format. The tournament is open to everyone, and all genders, identities and abilities are welcome within teams. Local recovery services and organisations have already been approached to take part.
